چکیده

Recent improvements in technology have facilitated the use of robots and virtual humans not only in entertainment and engineering but also in the military (Hill et al., 2003), healthcare (Pollack et al., 2002), and education domains (Johnson, Rickel, & Lester, 2000). As active partners of humans, such machine assistants can take the form of a robot or a graphical representation and serve the role of a financial assistant, a health manager, or even a social partner. As a result, interactive technologies are becoming an integral component of people’s everyday lives. Developing useful and usable assistants in everyday situations requires an interdisciplinary approach involving engineering, computer science, and psychology. Engineering fundamentals and skills to produce a functional system are important as well as mathematical foundations of computing such as computer architecture, algorithm theory, and embedded systems (Kitts & Quinn, 2004). Understanding the interaction with such systems also requires the scientific knowledge of mental processes and behavior of the users. Our perspective is from this psychology side, specifically, human factors psychology. The goal of this branch of psychology is a better understanding of user characteristics, attitudes, roles, and expectations of machine assistants. Characteristics such as perceived usefulness, ease of use, and complexity are critical to consider during the design given that in a pervasive ambi-

Machine Learning and Citizen Science: Opportunities and Challenges of Human-Computer Interaction

Background and Aim: In processing large data, scientists have to perform the tedious task of analyzing hefty bulk of data. Machine learning techniques are a potential solution to this problem. In citizen science, human and artificial intelligence may be unified to facilitate this effort. Considering the ambiguities in machine performance and management of user-generated data, this paper aims to...

Error assessment in man-machine systems using the CREAM method and human-in-the-loop fault tree analysis

Background and Objectives: Despite contribution to catastrophic accidents, human errors have been generally ignored in the design of human-machine (HM) systems and the determination of the level of automation (LOA). This paper aims to develop a method to estimate the level of automation in the early stage of the design phase considering both human and machine performance. Methods: A quantita...

Re-usability of traffic signs for inactive drivers with consideration of personal characteristics and sign features

There has been an increasing concern about inactive drivers who would easily lead to road accidents and fatalities once return to driving. This study investigated the re-usability of traffic signs for inactive drivers with consideration of driver factors and cognitive sign features. Fifty-seven Hong Kong Chinese, who possessed a full driving license but had not driven for an extended period, co...

Mind Model and Social Intelligence in Human-machine Collaborative Systems

Even though social intelligence has not been clearly defined yet, consideration of this new type of intelligence should be important for realizing a new generation of human-machine collaborative systems based on human-centered system design policy. In this article, social intelligence and mind model for implementing socially intelligent agents are studied. At first, emotional and affective aspe...
